Kamakura:

After 30 years of war and battles, the Minamoto family was victorious and defeated the opposing clan in 1192. The emperor gave the leader Yoritomo of the Minamoto the name the title shogun or supreme general of the emperor’s army. The shogun had the power of a military dictator. After the war they still kept the tradition of the emperor reigning from Kyoto. Kyoto was destroyed during the war but it was rebuilt out of the ruins of Heian. The shogun’s military headquarters was in Kamakura which was a very strong and powerful place. The Kamakura shoguns were strong enough to hold off two naval attacks from Kublai in 1274 and 1281. However these attacks drained the treasury of Kamakura and they were not able to pay the samurais. The samurai's now started to be more attached to local warlords rather than the shoguns. (Perry)
